A Night Sky Vista from Sardinia Image Credit & Copyright: [3]Tomás Slovinský Explanation: How many famous sky objects can you find in this image? The featured dark sky composite combines over 60 exposures spanning over 220 degrees to create a veritable menagerie of night sky wonders. Visible celestial icons include the [4]Belt of Orion, the [5]Orion Nebula, the [6]Andromeda Galaxy, the [7]California Nebula, and bright stars [8]Sirius and [9]Betelgeuse. You can verify that you found these, if you did, by checking an [10]annotated version of the image. A bit harder, though, is finding [11]Polaris and the [12]Big Dipper. Also discernible are several meteors from the [13]Quandrantids meteor shower, red and green [14]airglow, and two friends of the astrophotographer. The picture was captured in January from [15]Sardinia, [16]Italy. You can [17]see sky wonders in your own [18]night sky tonight -- including more meteors than usual -- because tonight is near [19]peak of the yearly Orionids meteor shower.
