It has been said that springtime in the Carpathians is like “waking from a dream”—a time when ice melts, flowers bloom, and birds begin to sing. On April 7, 2020, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of an early spring day in the Carpathian Mountains. Snow clings to the highest elevations while the valleys show significant greening.
The arc of the Carpathian Mountains stretches about 1500 km (932 mi) across seven countries and are the second largest mountain range in Europe. More than half of the range is located in Romania and also touch Ukraine, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Austria. The mountains are home to a large population of brown bears and lynxes, as well as one of the largest undisturbed forests in Europe.
