The great thing about democracy is that it gives every voter a
    chance to do something stupid.

All I Want for Christmas 2013
    By Janis Kracht, 1:261/38, janis@filegate.net

A moderator in FTSC_PUBLIC who understands what his job is all
about, and is willing to _Fix_ the broken FTSC election process.

How much does it take to have the RCs who are the voters submit
their votes via netmail with a password selected by the RC instead
of posting ballots in a public echomail area??

Forget the daily updates in the election since this kind of thing
can affect the outcome. Votes should not be posted until the
    election is finished.

Use ACKs for the election with the password directly to the voter,
not by a public ACK. The RC can check if his vote was counted
correctly by checking the netmail-reply ACK of his password/vote.

So far all discussions of the election process in the recent
election have been deemed off-topic in the FTSC_PUBLIC by Election
Coordinator Michiel van der Vlist, and this is not right. People in
Fidonet want elections to be fair - to cut discussions off now does
not help the situation. It just makes the FTSC Election Coordinator
    look very bad.

Define the rules of majority clearly so that people (yes, the
sysops!) know how a tie vote will be handled.

In our recent election, one candidate received the same number of
Yays as Nays if one considered Bob Seaborn's vote and Jon Justvig's
votes as valid. The EC refused to count those two votes for this
candidate and so avoided the question this time... but it could and
probably will happen again in the future. How will a tie like this
be broken? Will the EC consider that technically by not receiving
more Yays than Nays the candidate should not have been elected?

We need a non-involved honest person from _any_ zone to be the
Election Coordinator in future FTSC elections, and NOT one who is
running in the election. I have yet to see any other election which
was handled as this one was handled.. the idea of a person running
the election, voting for himself, and acking his own vote was
comical to say the least. Further, to have a person running in the
election make judgements on disputed votes was a bit of a farce.

    Fidonet deserves better than this!!

As Dale Shipp posted in the FTSC_PUBLIC echo:

fido.FTSC_PUBLIC message #1242 from Dale Shipp to Kurt Weiske.
       Entered on 5th December, 2013 at 23:40
    ============
    A. Select someone to tally the votes who is honest, and who is
    independent of the election.

    B. Let the voters submit their votes with a password. Then they can
confirm that their vote was correctly counted.

    C. Don't publish running totals of the votes until the election is
closed. It is ok to ACK people who voted using the passwords, but
the total should not be disclosed until voting is over.

    INFO:

Fidogazette is published by Janis Kracht, Editor, with the help
of Richard Webb (Old School ToolBox). If you have an idea for a
column or a series of articles, please contact me :)

    New!
    Mailing-List subscriptions via
    www.filegate.net // lists / ?p=subscribe
but of course you can always link into your uplink and use
Tick or a tick compatible program.

    Where to Send Your Articles

Unlike most editors, I surely do not mind running my mouth
when there is a sparsity of articles for the 'zine. I'd
MUCH rather you sent in material... lacking that, I will
fill these issues with my meanderings and thoughts and
hopefully we will grow into something of consequence here
    :)

    Write an article!

If you WOULD like to submit an article, feel free to drop
    your article off at:

Email attach to address: janis @ filegate.net

Fidonet attach: Janis Kracht at 1:261/38
     Modem: 607-200-4076
     Binkp: 1:261/100 filegate.net port 24555
     telnet mailer: filegate.net

If you are using routed Fidonet mail, don't send articles as routed
attaches. They will fail somewhere along the path before getting here.
Send them instead direct to filegate.net.

Give it a title, sign your name and network address if you have
    one and send it along!

Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me
and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice
that way (g). Spell checking your own work will help though
(something I'm typically guilty of (g)).

To send reviews or recipes to the Food section, email or
    netmail Janis as above.

Email address for submissions to Dr.Debug:
To send a question to Dr. Debug, email a question to:
          drdebug @ filegate.net
or post in the fidogazette echo! :)

To send a listing to the FidoGazette bbslist, email your
    listing to:
      bbslist @ filegate.net
or post it in the fidogazette echo!
