Take for instance recent posts in the Fidonews echo about past Fidonews Editors. Some don't remember (though I do, and I know Richard Webb does) way back when Chris Baker simply started publishing Fidonews from his system. He wasn't appointed by the previous editor, nor by any ZCs, RCs, or *Cs at all. He was simply concerned that Fidonews had stopped being published, so he picked up the reins and went from there. It was much like the Fidonews before Gary Perkins and now Nick Kill took over as Editor... sick of an empty journal for all intents and purposes, these guys hoped to make the Fidonews issues interesting and relevant to today's Fidonet. The FidoGazette was started back about 5 years ago as an alternative to Fidonews since Bjorn Felten would not stop posting his boilerplate-empty issues, nor would he agree to hand over the editorship to someone who was willing to bring fidonews 'back to life'. So here we are, on the 6th year of publication of The FidoGazette. I'll still be helping with content in the Fidonews though from what I hear from Nick, some interesting issues will be coming.. A good start to the new year :) FIDOGAZETTE Vol 6 No 1 Page 2 January 1st, 2012 ----------------------------------------------------------------- ================================================================= A R T I C L E S ================================================================= Cleaning Up Who Has Access to Your Social Media Accounts ByJanis Kracht, 1:261/38, janis@filegate.net http://tinyurl.com/7xqsyyp This is a great article by Sarah Kessler, enabling you to clean up your social media accounts quickly. So many apps have access to all the data you provide on sites like facebook, twitter and LinkedIn, et. al.. You may not realize the damage they can cause or how many apps have access to your varied accounts, so Israel-based entrepreneur Avi Charkham has "cut down the time it will take you to find out" how many apps have permission to your account. In about an hour, you have flavorful, thick pea soup. 3 tablespoons butter 2 onions, chopped 1 ham bone 20 oz. frozen peas 1 1/4 quart chicken stock or bouillion 1 carrot, 1/2 inch slices 1 stalk celery, 1/2 inch slices 1 cup ham, cut in chunks salt/pepper to taste 1/4 teaspoon thyme Melt the butter in a soup pot and add the onions, carrot and celery. Cook for 5 minutes. Add the ham bone and cook for about 5 minutes longer. Add the frozen peas and turn the heat to medium high to defrost them some, stirring. Add the chicken broth, a dash of salt and or pepper, and the thyme. Simmer for one hour. At the end of the hour, remove the bone. Pour the soup into a blender and carefully blend until smooth or less smooth if you like it "chunky". Return to the soup pot. Add the ham pieces and simmer for about 10-15 minutes more. Finally, we like to add about 3 more tablespoons of butter and a touch of salt to the pot before serving. FIDOGAZETTE Vol 6 No 1 Page 4 January 1st, 2012 ----------------------------------------------------------------- ================================================================= C O L U M N S ================================================================= FileGate News By Janis Kracht, 1:261/38, janis@filegate.net This week, a new version of filegate.hdr was distributed in the file echo, FG_WORF. This small file is to applied to archives released via the IFDC FileGate Distribution as a comment file. When applied as a comment file (not archived as an additional file, say like file_id.diz or a .exe file), the comment file does not change the contents of any archive it is attached to. This can be important to authors who don't want people messing with their carefully tested and validated software. The comment file sits "outside" the archive, so sysops distributing an author's file don't have to worry about violating author's rights. The comment file, filegate.hdr, simply tells people as they are unarchiving the file where the file came from and where one may find more information regarding the IFDC FileGate. Here's what it looks like: ====================cut here=============================== IFDC FileGate Project Archive (c) 1994-2012 Distributed by The IFDC FileGate Project (sm) For more information about the Project please visit http://www.filegate.net --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ====================cut here=============================== SysOps who recieve files from the IFDC FileGate are asked not to remove this informational comment file until all uplinks have received there daily dose of files. In other words, you can replace this comment with say a comment about your own BBS, but you should wait to do so until everyone who picks up from you has done so. First, it's the right thing to do :) Secondly and perhaps more importantly, waiting until everyone picks up their files will prevent the CRC from changing in the tic file distributed with the file :) As you probably know, when the CRC of an archive changes, the toss will fail, creating .bad files instead of .tic file.
