He had a heathkit H89 computer! Darn, how many times did I dream of building one of those when I'd see the ads and articles in trade journals :) Enjoy this look at the past, but realize that Mike is right in mentioning why Fidonet is still an important option. This is a good opportunity for those who haven't been in Fidonet a long time to get a sense of why we do things the way we do. -ed As a matter of fact .. KW> I suppose a more ethical hubmaster would make echoes not on his KW>or her system available as passthrough - unless there was a KW>legal issue at hand. There's never been any grey area with KW>potential illegal content in Fido echoes, has there? KW> kurt weiske | kweiske at realitycheckbbs dot org KW> realitycheckBBS | http://realitycheckbbs.org Region 19 and specifically Net 117 here are precisely where at least a part of the huge original USA legal complaint mess in relation to pornography and virus plus contaminated FidoNet messaging took place. Some folks really, I think, still have no idea that FidoNet started here in the College Station,Texas 'area' back even when modem speeds were moving from 300 Baud to the 1200 Baud level stuff! I still have my actual 1200 Baud modem that was used for Node 3000 here in Net 117, together with the HeathKit H89 computer which hosted it, all on CPM and still have the original FidoNet 5-1/4" floppy diskette with the original program on it. The original work to do all this was a part or the now deceased Paul Sittler's work at the Vet School at Texas A&M University and for years, net 117 was larger and far more active than even Net 106 in Houston! The legal issue and forced consideration for absolutely illegal content in Fido echos broke out during an issue in which the only practical way to pay for the dialup even local long distance telephone connections you had to do to be a member of Fido, apparently 'made sense' to those who merged a number of pornography message networks not actually a part of Fido, into Fido related combined traffic. Which I had *NOTHING* to do with any of this, but in that I was horribly involved in huge USA legal issues of which it was alleged that Fido message traffic was involved, but it was not and after even a DECADE of total telecommunications absolute proof that I made that every dime of the MILLIONS of claimed USD in taxes owed of which every dime claimed was TOTAL US Government fraud, the attornies forced complete logging, message content analysis and set huge fines and criminal issues for what was 'their' definition of what was 'illegal' content in FidoNet message traffic. Which we, here in Net 117, ABSOLUTELY proved was 'fixed', but with a huge percentage of the 'users' gone in the process. The first actual 'virus' that I think is a correct claim here, actually came from an accidental error that Paul Sittler made in his original code creation for a utility that we needed to create logged auto multi-node forwarding and distribution for the Net 3000 sites which included many mission critial hospital and emergency operations center connections that didn't actually exist in the formal FidoNet NodeList, but were in private sections added to it for mession critical defense purposes. What happended with the 'virus' deal was that Paul forgot to erase the message copies for the forwarded messages from internal step server operations going through what you now consider to be HUB's and so on! In the week following this error that the original FidoNet author elected to add this utility to FidoNet, this error filled up almost every server in the whole Fido operation with trash! Which the local Texas law enforcement people and Texas A&M's departments that also were using the Fido stuff on a private basis, long before Internet stuff really existed in any plentiful format, were also using from Paul's and others' work. Plus in this whole mess of you gotta really pay for every tiny bit of telephone time even for towns twenty miles away like the little community of Plantersville, Texas from College Station, any dialing error could really cost you money. As well as any little tiny error from a virus that set your modem calling Australia from College Station, Texas,I assure you. We lost one node in Net 117 that got hit in this server full and line busy deal who came back to home from a week's out of town oil field work to find over $1,000 USD on his GTE telephone bill from his modem that had tried to reach the 117 server that was jammed every few minuted for the entire week he was gone! And GTE took it to court to collect that fee and won it, complete with all the Fido logs and so on that the local cops gladly furnished as part of the porn scheme trace work. From which REAL virus efforts ramped up from FidoNet 117 here at Texas A&M University and Net 117 members actually took down the entire Texas A&M University computer network system from FidoNet research at Net 117 here. Which I had *NOTHING* to do with and totally cooperated with the officers to eventually track down and let them do what they eventually did to the source of that mess. The massive result of which, for all practical purposes, pretty well totally destroyed the final membership of Net 117 for all the required use, message archive requirements and connection pattern trace work that were absolutely required by the local law enforcement findings. From which I finally wound up as Net 117C as a result of my real capability to prove the Fido, as such, had nothing to do with all of this and was a totally needed normal way people should be able to communicate, pre and into early Internet creation. Plus what was *ABSSOLUTELY* really needed as Fido still *CAN* do, To provide for seriously needed emergency communications that can even go back to bridging POTS telephone connections to even digital radio system stuff, and even if needed, to HF shortwave digital communications service in the horrible event that such might even be the only way to connect even an area like a FidoNet net to some other place in the USA, or even across the world, if that were all that is left. I have the thank you letters from the ARRL to me to prove that we did it here and absolutely still have the logged message content in the database that is still, at least for me, 'legally' needed for traffic that I participate in here. Still to this day. Though I assure you it is silly to think about that given Cell Phones, text messaging, even the Cloud that is now raining down on us. Just don't think for a minute that possible illegal message content isn't something a *C needs to consider for Fido. I assure you it is still an interesting ride on this pony. Errrr Puppy Fido Dog? Return the meat to the pot. Cover the dutch oven and simmer slowly for about 2 - 2 1/2 hours. When the meat is done, remove it from the dutch oven again, and slice into chunks. Return the meat to the pot and add the beans, the elbow macaroni and the chicken broth. Simmer covered until the elbows are cooked, about 10 minutes more. Stir the stew frequently while the elbows and beans are cooking. Salt and pepper to taste and serve.
