Some of you may remember the MODERATOR echo from years
back.. Richard has elisted a new echo, ECHOMODS which
sounds like a good echo. I'm looking forward to visiting
    it :)

                          Connectivity, again

Last time in this space I discussed how the old groupmail concept
might be one way to generate some interesting content for Fidonet.
Hence I promised to go into a little more depth on the subject.
First though, let's allay a bit of possible confusion.

Like a lot of things we have in Fidonet there are other processes
and procedures with similar names from the world outside Fidonet.
If I recall groupmail is one of these, designed more for the
commercial environment to emulate a mailing list as commonly seen
on the internet. The group concept I"m discussing here, as
designed by Tom Henderson and the folks at Sea used publicly
available message bases as do your local conferences and echomail
conferences. Just want to make sure we're all discussing the same
    thing.

First, I'll be up front about two points. First I'll reiterate one
I made last time, I'm essentially a user of this stuff. The second
is that although I had Sea's groupmail software to look at on my
old system I never actually put it to use. I acquired it because
I was thinking then I might wish to use it to begin moderating a
group instead of an echo, and offer it to interested systems. I
was also involved in a qwk specialty network which allowed some of
its forums to be gated as echomail via a system in California, but
other forums it offered had moderators who did not wish to have
their conference distributed in this way. I thought group might be
just the solution to their concerns.

The first thing i found was that I would have to look for the
original sea archiver, as I had, and still have pkpak or whatever
it's called. The only time it ever gets invoked here is when done
so by squish . So, it remained in an archive and I never
pursued that one further, as I moved, the other feed left FIdo,
and I'd let my automation call that specialty network's system in
Chicago and grab a .qwk packet once or twice a month. My ld bill
had grown exponentially with the move to the sticks anyway, thanks
to becoming a hub for my local area. The folks from the qwk
network were also a bit unhappy with how echomail worked, as their
forums were geared toward the serious production professional and
not the weekend hobbyist. Because of this they wanted a way to
filter posts before they propagated outward which did not fit with
the tone or the knowledge level of the conferences they
distributed. Before you ask, they weren't snobs about it, they had
a couple of conferences for the beginner to ask questions, but they
wanted to filter the newbie queries out of the stream of the
conferences for the pros and move them to the appropriate places,
or if the level of discourse was unsuitable delete them altogether.

After my last column somebody asked about moderated newsgroups
versus other methods. USenet, or the nntp protocol was designed
with some of the same deficiencies as echomail in this regard.
Fully moderated newsgroups are a sort of kludge for nntp. Most
fully moderated groups I've seen (where the moderator approves a
post where it propagates) don't do well with picking up all posts
entered downstream at other nntp servers. Most I've seen that were
fully moderated offered an email address to which one sent posts
intended for the group. The moderator then either placed your post
where it would be picked up and propagated, or nuked it, whichever
    he felt was appropriate.

Now to the other problem with implementing Sea's groupmail within
modern Fidonet. Many of our modern mailers do not support file and
update requests as did binkleyterm, Frontdoor, etc.

                   Announcing the Echomods conference

                         Richard Webb, 1:116/901

Do you moderate conferences on FIdonet and elsewhere? Are you
interested in possibly starting a conference that may be of
interest to others? IF the answer to either of these questions is
yes you might want to link to the echomods echo.

I formed this conference recently after an exchange of messages
lamenting the loss of the moderator echo. tHe echo is intended to
serve all moderators and wanna be moderators in building useful
enjoyable echoes. Its rules are simple, and will be posted
periodically for the benefit of newcomers. HOwever, most of us who
are regular denizens of Fidonet shouldn't find them bothersome as
they're the customary rules governing FIdonet echomail conferences.

By the time you read this major backbone distribution systems
should have it configured so you can establish your link to the
conference. Any fIdonet system is welcome to participate.

    Diner Rice Pudding
I got this recipe for rice pudding from a friend of mine in
New Jersey who ran a diner. It's the best rice pudding
recipe I've ever used. The result is creamy and delicious.

1 1/2 cups long grain rice, uncooked
    2 quarts whole milk
1 1/2 cups sugar (or less to taste)
    1 Tablespoon vanilla extract
    pinch of salt
    Nutmeg

Place all ingredients except for nutmeg in a heavy pot.
Turn heat to high just long enough to bring mixture to a
boil. Reduce heat to low immediately and cover tightly.
Allow to simmer for about 45 minutes or until the rice is
soft, adding more milk if necessary.

Remove from heat and cool. When at room temperature,
sprinkle nutmeg all over the top, and refrigerate.

         Issue #: 10

We are continuing from the last issue where we were going over the
family linage from Adam to Jared. You can see here that Jared was
quite old and that is inspiring because at his age, he was still
able to father children. Hundreds of years old these folks are and
         how blessed they were.

(KJV) Gen 5:19 And Jared lived after he begat Enoch eight hundred
years, and begat sons and daughters:

(KJV) Gen 5:20 And all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty
and two years: and he died.

(KJV) Gen 5:21 And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat
                         Methuselah:

(KJV) Gen 5:22 And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah
three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:

(KJV) Gen 5:23 And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty
                         and five years:

(KJV) Gen 5:24 And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God
                         took him.

(KJV) Heb 11:5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see
death; and was not found, because God had translated
him: for before his translation he had this
                         testimony, that he pleased God.

Enoch did not have to see death because he was pleased by God and
because he Enoch had walked with the Lord. He was not found because
he was carried up to heaven. It was the faith that Enoch had of the
Lord. Faith can and will move mountains. If we only just believe!

(KJV) Gen 5:25 And Methuselah lived an hundred eighty and seven
                         years, and begat Lamech:

(KJV) Gen 5:26 And Methuselah lived after he begat Lamech seven
hundred eighty and two years, and begat sons and
                         daughters:

(KJV) Gen 5:27 And all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred
sixty and nine years: and he died.

(KJV) Gen 5:28 And Lamech lived an hundred eighty and two years,
                         and begat a son:

(KJV) Gen 5:29 And he called his name Noah, saying, This same shall
comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands,
because of the ground which the LORD hath cursed.

(KJV) Gen 5:30 And Lamech lived after he begat Noah five hundred
ninety and five years, and begat sons and daughters:

(KJV) Gen 5:31 And all the days of Lamech were seven hundred seventy
and seven years: and he died.

(KJV) Gen 5:32 And Noah was five hundred years old: and Noah begat
                         Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Here you have seen the continual linage from the first man up to
Noah. We will explore the life of Noah in the following article. He
was a great man and has been remembered by a multitude.

If you've enjoyed our meeting, remember to ask your SysOp to carry
MINISTER, an echo with FidoNet if he/she doesn't already. Remember
also to keep your head up high. May God bless you and keep you!

*** This conclude this issue of e-Ministries provided by Jon

    Where to Send Your Articles

Unlike most editors, I surely do not mind running my mouth when
there is a sparcity of articles for the 'zine. I'd MUCH rather
you sent in material... lacking that, I will fill these issues
with my meanderings and thoughts and hopefully we will grow into
    something of consequence here :)

    Write an article!

If you WOULD like to submit an article, feel free to drop
    your article off at:

Email attach to address: janis @ filegate.net
Fidonet attach: Janis Kracht at 1:261/38 Modem: 607-655-5652
1:261/100 filegate.net port 24555 via binkp or telnet mailer
(If you are using routed fidonet mail, don't send articles as routed
attaches. They will fail somewhere along the path before getting here.
Send them instead direct to filegate.net).

Standard binkp port only supports BinkP (24554).

Give it a title, sign your name and network address if you have
    one and send it along!

Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me
and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice
that way (g). Spell checking your own work will help though
(something I'm typically guilty of (g)).

To send reviews or recipes to the Food section, email or netmail Janis
    as above.

Email address for submissions to Dr.Debug:
To send a question to Dr. Debug, email a question to:
          drdebug @ filegate.net
or post in the fidogazette echo! :)

To send a listing to the FidoGazette bbslist, email your
      listing to:
        bbslist @ filegate.net
or post it in the fidogazette echo!
