Richard, in his continuing Toolbox series, brings to light issues that all
    of us should care about.

Many of these powers like warrantless gps tracking can be abused by
local authorities, and U.S. Attorneys for political purposes.

A U.S. Attorney in one administration could use this power to track
people protesting outside an Abortion Clinic... The U.S. Attorney for
the same district in the next administration could use this power to
track people protesting outside a military recruiting office.

One of the primary reasons for requiring warrants for such actions is
that a judge has to be convinced that a crime has been committed or
is likely to be committed. That serves to discourage the abuse of
these powers for political purposes. Absent the requirement for
    warrants, the control is lost.

One of the protections that the founding fathers thought they were
building into the Constitution was the protection against the use of
government agencies to suppress legitimate political dissent.

Suppose a U.S. Attorney was shown the content of a fidonet political
echo and decided that some of the posters in that echo should be ummm
"watched" and had a law enforcement agent slap a gps tracker on that
person's car. Given this Appelate Ruling there is nothing to stop
them. They no longer need to prove to a judge that you are
    conspiring to commit a crime.

                                  The old school TOolbox

                           By RIchard Webb, 1:116/901

                       Welcome to the Panopticon!

George Orwell's big brother is quite healthy these days. Sometimes
he appears as a company offering us convenience. Sometimes he's
the cop on the beat making the world safe for good people
everywhere. Sometimes he's just a malicious snoop looking for new
and improved ways to steal. It's bad enough that we must surrender
personal information to folks we're not sure we can trust, but even
if we think they're pillars of integrity we can't be real sure
they've taken adequate precautions to protect our personal
information from unauthorized access. Security experts have been
trying to hammer the point home to the public now for over a decade
that lax cyber security becomes everybody else's problem,
especially with these "always on" broadband connections. But, darn
it, we know that not just is grandma's broadband connection
probably not secured, but the broadband connection of our insurance
agent or our bank might not be protected any better. Therefore, if
you're a curmudgeon like me, often you choose to just opt out
whenever possible. That means often foregoing the perceived
convenience or ease of use offered by a service or tool. Still, we
must often go even further by applying some common sense to how we
use all these tools and techniques. Often the biggest security
problem we face is our own methods and practices.

I mention all these issues in this space for one main reason. WE
in Fidonet have been grappling with these issues now since echomail
made us the place to connect for new computer users the world over
back a quarter of a century ago. We grappled with protection of
users' privacy: what it meant, how to go about it. How much was
too much? How little was too little? Remember the debates in
Fidonet and the Fidonews when Caller ID was the new player? Do you
find it handy to look at that display before you answer the phone?
I'll bet you do, and possibly, if it's not somebody you wish to
deal with right now you're quite content to let it roll over to
voicemail. Does that sound like you? Sure sounds like a lot of
    folks I know.

Here again, that Caller ID data is a convenience. You don't think
they just offered it to you the regular subscriber out of the
goodness of their hearts now do you? If you do I hate to burst
your bubble, but Caller ID is a valuable tool in the marketing
world. Call a firm to inquire after a part for that classic car
you're restoring, we've now got a phone number, and possibly a
name. Hit all sorts of data banks, including telephone
directories, etc. and now we know that you might be interested in
restoring classic cars, which indicates that you might have more
than one ride. Folks with more than one vehicle are great targets
for auto insurance companies who are trying to lure customers with
deep discounts for multi vehicle families. SO, not just do we make
some money selling classic car parts and accessories, but we sell
data too. Yessir, even if you were just "kicking tires" when you
called our toll free line we still made a few cents by having your
entry in the database we sold to those other fine folks. You bought
nothing and we still made money, and you couldn't even say no.

We sysops sure found it handy though, another easy step in user
verification, and convenient for the user too. If our boards were
so configured a user didn't even need to go through all the log on
steps, type his name, and if the caller id data matched he was
immediately admitted to the inner sanctum at his appropriate
privilege level. That is, until he wanted to download a file from
a friend's house <grin>. Still, it wasn't developed because it
would be a boon to busy sysops.

Before I get back to talking about the scary world of the present
when it comes to personal privacy invasions and the harm they can do
you think about the new home of the future that is always being
touted as the next best thing. Your refrigerator tells the grocer
what you use and are out of, your smart house tells the smart grid
about your electrical usage, down to the nitty gritty of what rooms
you occupy when, etc. So play a little bit of what if with me here
for a minute. Not only just did your smart refrigerator take all the
tedium out of compiling your grocery list for you, but it told your
insurance carrier that you and your family sure eat a lot of red
meat, and you personally consumed quite a lot of beer over the last
week. so, your insurance carrier tells you that it's not going to
pay for that cardiac cath your doc ordered because your lifestyle
choices contributed to that possible plaque buildup in your arteries.
Hey you signed the release when you bought the policy now.

I for one don't want my refrigerator compiling my grocery list.
Maybe I plan to be out of town next week, and don't want it to
order another gallon of milk that will just sit there and be
unusable possibly when I return. NO I don't want to signal my
smart house that I'll be out of town so it can tell the world that
it's unattended. If anything I want my "smart" house to feign
normal patterns of human activity to deter those with malicious
intent. But that's the world of the future, or so they tell us.
But hey, 20 years ago it was said that 640k of ram ought to be
    enough for anyone.

That's the possible future however, and present day can be
dangerous enough. I'm sure you've seen those advertisements for
those little gps trackers you can attach to your pet, or your car.
Look 'em up on the web and find out where rover is roaming, find
out if the kid really went to the movies with his girlfriend. Did
you know that it's quite legal for the cop to attach one to the
undercarriage of your vehicle if it's sitting in a parking lot, or
even in your driveway? NO warrant required, just slap it on there
and start tracking where you go. even better than those cameras at
traffic lights that read your tags. Handy for that jilted ex
spouse too, but illegal for him or her to use in that matter. But
illegal is cold comfort after days weeks or even months of
    harassment and aggravation.

If you doubt the statements made in the previous paragraph you can
look it up. The U.S. ninth judicial circuit's appellate court
handed down that ruling last year. You can look it up. I'll leave
you with that pleasant thought, and be back with more scary stories
    from cyberspace next time.

    ==Making Yogurt at Home==

    What equipment do I need?

    1. Cooking/candy thermometer
       3-4 quart heavy sauce pan
       ladle

    2. Yogurt cups and lids, or plastic wrap to cover
The Yogurt cups should be about 8oz. each. You can use old yogurt
cups you've washed throughly, glass jars which you can over with
plastic wrap. We've used 8oz jelly jars for individual servings.
Or you can just use a clean 1 quart wide-mouth glass bottle.
Also have one similarly sized clean cup for mixing.

    3. A yogurt maker, or one of the options below if you don't have a Yogurt
       maker:

It helps if you have a yogurt maker to keep your batch of yogurt warm
throughout the culturing process, but it's not necessary.

Suitable places to culture your yogurt are:

         1. Place the jars on bottom "floor" of the cabinet above your exhaust
fan, with the exhaust fan _light_ left on (not the fan heh)
            overnight.

         2. Preheat your oven to 100F. Shut off the oven once it reaches
temperature, place your yogurt "contraption" (see * below) with
your yogurt cups in it, in the oven. Turn on the oven light and
leave it on over night with the oven door closed.

    4. *Large soup kettle style pot, lined with plastic garbage bags for
insulation. When you stuff garbage bags loosely with plastic shopping
bags, it works great (grin). You should have enough to line the sides,
bottom and one more for the top. Add a few shopping bags around jars so
       they are stabilized.

Ok, you've collected the 'hardware' end of things.. time to move on to the
    yogurt :)

    =====Getting started====

To make a quart of yogurt, you'll need one quart fresh milk and about a
tablesoon of plain yogurt. You can buy a container of plain yogurt at the
store and swipe a tablespoon before you start eating it (grin), or you can
order yogurt starter online. Your health food store may stock yogurt
    starter as well.

Line up the jars you'll be using. Have a ladle nearby. Make sure all
your cups and lids if any, are clean.

If you are using a yogurt maker, plug it in and put the jars in it. Keep
    the lids nearby.

    Ingredients:
    1 quart milk
1 tablespoon plain yogurt, or a scant teaspoon of yogurt starter

Place the milk in the sauce pan over low heat, and heat to 180F, almost
boiling. Don't let it boil, and don't let it burn on the bottom (too high
heat). Use a low to med-low temperature.

Use your thermometer often to check the temperature of the milk. Once
you've reached 180F, shut off the burner, and remove the pan from the heat
source to a cold burner. Set the thermometer so that it is sitting in the
milk, but not touching the sauce pan bottom - it should dip into the milk
to guage the temperature of the milk. It will take a little while (about
10-15 minutes or so) for the milk to drop to the temerature you want, which
is 110F. Be patient :) Once you see the temperature is at 110F, your work
starts and you should be quick about these steps :)

    1. Put about 1/4 cup of the 110F milk in a _clean_ cup.
We'll add the yogurt to this in a moment.
    2. Ladle the rest of the milk into each yogurt jar or cup until split evenly.
    3. Now stir 1 tablespoon of yogurt into the first cup you used in #1 above.
Stir the yogurt and milk very very gently.
    4. Carefully split the mixture of milk and yogurt from #1 between each of the
cups. Stir each cup very gently after you've added the mixuture.
    5. Cover each container with it's lid, or with tightly stretched plastic
wrap. Sometimes I cover this with tin foil as well.

If you're using a yogurt maker, cap the tops, or cover as above and note
note the time. 7 or 8 hours later, you will have yogurt :) Refridgerate
    when done.

If you are using the oven, put some insulation on the bottom and sides as
above, and place the yogurt cups in Soup pot. You may want to place
plastic shopping bags around the cups to keep them from tipping over.
Cover the top with a top insulation as above and then put the lid on the
Soup Pot. Place your "contraption" in your oven and follow the directions
    above :)

    Problems:

Thin, watery yogurt can be caused by any of the following:

      - the temperature of the milk was too hot and killed the yogurt culture.
You should wait until the heated milk is between 106-110F to add
yogurt. 106F works best for me.

      - the temperature was too cool.. you let the milk drop well below 104F

      - you added too much yogurt starter or fresh yogurt to the warmed milk.
Yogurt will be thin if the culture is crowded.. More does not make it
        thicker :)

    Options:
You can add 1/3 cup dry milk solids to the warmed milk, but when you do
this, do it as soon as the milk hits 180F. Stir well, and watch the
temperature of the milk because it will probably cool a bit faster. This
produces creamy, soft yogurt, the best!

What to do if it's soup:
Let the yogurt sit for another 4-6 hours.. or put in the 'fridge .. check
it again in the morning. Sometimes, things are not as bad as you may think
:) At worst, you'll have a yummy yogurt drink :)

    Important note:
Don't forget to swipe a tablespoon of yogurt from your freshly made batch so
you can make another :) Just keep it sealed in a container in the 'fridge
until you're ready to make more.

         Issue #: 9

(KJV) Gen 5:1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the
day that God created man, in the likeness of God made
                        he him;

(KJV) Gen 5:2 Male and female created he them; and blessed them,
and called their name Adam, in the day when they were
                        created.

(KJV) Gen 5:3 And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat
a son in his own likeness, after his image; and
                        called his name Seth:

Can you imagine that? Living a hundred and thirty years and still
able to produce a child. That is amazing in our day and age.

(KJV) Gen 5:4 And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were
eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters:

(KJV) Gen 5:5 And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred
and thirty years: and he died.

And, his age didn't stop there. Nine hundred and thirty years is a
long to live. It is possible he did not age as fast as you and I do
         today.

(KJV) Gen 5:6 And Seth lived an hundred and five years, and begat
                        Enos:

(KJV) Gen 5:7 And Seth lived after he begat Enos eight hundred and
seven years, and begat sons and daughters:

(KJV) Gen 5:8 And all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve
                        years: and he died.

Here is our second generation from Adam to Seth and now onto Enos.
The chain of generation linage begins and from today has never
ended. In fact, it has only multiplied.

(KJV) Gen 5:9 And Enos lived ninety years, and begat Cainan:

(KJV) Gen 5:10 And Enos lived after he begat Cainan eight hundred
and fifteen years, and begat sons and daughters:

Are you still with me? Adam, Seth, Enos to Cainan.

(KJV) Gen 5:11 And all the days of Enos were nine hundred and five
                         years: and he died.

(KJV) Gen 5:12 And Cainan lived seventy years, and begat
                         Mahalaleel:

(KJV) Gen 5:13 And Cainan lived after he begat Mahalaleel eight
hundred and forty years, and begat sons and
                         daughters:

(KJV) Gen 5:14 And all the days of Cainan were nine hundred and ten
                         years: and he died.

(KJV) Gen 5:15 And Mahalaleel lived sixty and five years, and begat
                         Jared:

(KJV) Gen 5:16 And Mahalaleel lived after he begat Jared eight
hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and
                         daughters:

(KJV) Gen 5:17 And all the days of Mahalaleel were eight hundred
ninety and five years: and he died.

(KJV) Gen 5:18 And Jared lived an hundred sixty and two years, and
                         he begat Enoch:

Basically, this chapter has just discussion the decendents of Adam,
Seth, Enos, Cainan, Mahalaleel, Jared up to Enoch. We will close
this article now and will resume later. I hope you have been
inspired by the life long generations up to this point and we will
resume the linage and the following next time.

If you've enjoyed our meeting, remember to ask your SysOp to carry
MINISTER, an echo with FidoNet if he/she doesn't already. Remember
also to keep your head up high. May God bless you and keep you!

*** This conclude this issue of e-Ministries provided by Jon
             Justvig.

    Where to Send Your Articles

Unlike most editors, I surely do not mind running my mouth when
there is a sparcity of articles for the 'zine. I'd MUCH rather
you sent in material but I think until someone starts a
discussion you feel like commenting about, you evil dullards
(just kidding!!!) will no doubt complain about "no issues" (grin)
So I will fill these issues with my meanderings and thoughts and
hopefully we will grow into something of consequence here :)
Don't be offended.. write an article!

If you WOULD like to submit an article and prove me wrong about
the dullard aspect of you guys and gals <bg>, feel free to drop
    your article off at:

By email attach to address: janis @ filegate.net
Fidonet attach: Janis Kracht at 1:261/38 Modem: 607-655-5652
1:261/100 filegate.net port 24555 via binkp or telnet mailer
(don't send articles as routed attaches, send them direct to filegate.net).

Standard binkp port only supports BinkP (24554).

Give it a title, sign your name and network address if you have
    one and send it along!

Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me
and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice
that way (g). Spell checking your own work will help though
(something I'm typically guilty of (g)).

To send reviews or recipes to the Food section, email or netmail Janis
     as above.

New email address for submissions to Dr.Debug:
To send a question to Dr. Debug, email a question to drdebug @
filegate.net or post in the fidogazette echo! :)

To send a listing to the fidogazette internet bbs list, send your bbs
listing to bbslist @ filegate.net or post it in the fidogazette echo!
